This is really an interesting thread, which I hope will go on a long time.
Really, when it comes to archives and restorations, I think that the
original object should be kept and safe-guarded under the most favourable
conditions, and I also think that a digital copy of the object in it's
original state always should be kept the same way as the original. Like
Mary Jo says, and she really has an important point here, which every
archivist knows or should know;
"tastes change and ideas about what restoration should do change with fashion".
That's exactly it! Keep the original object and a digital copy of it
unchanged. Then make a copy of the digital copy and change that, according
to what science and fashion of the time requiers.
