Re: GG FW: <inquiry> Bernstein/Gould pfm in April 1962
Sean and all,
sorry, I made a mistake in my previous mail.
Of course, Music & Arts CD 682 is a recording of the April 6 performance,
with Bernstein conducting the NY Philarmonic; Music & Arts CD 297 is a
slightly later recording of an October 9 performance, with Peter H.Adler
conducting the Baltimore S.O.
It is interesting to compare the timings of the two performances, only a
few months apart:
April 6 (Bernstein): I, Maestoso: 25':18"; II, Adagio: 13':37"; III, Rondo:
Allegro non troppo: 13':23"
October 9 (Adler): I, Maestoso: 21':18"; II, Adagio: 9':32""; III,
Rondo: Allegro non troppo: 12':34". I'm not sure that the timing of the
Adagio is correct:if it is, it should be the fastest on record!
Last minute news! My very efficient son has discovered the Melodram CD
with Bernstein conducting I sent him to hunt for. The timings on the
cover are completely different from Music & Arts CD 682!
April 9 (??) (Bernstein): I, Maestoso: 21':10"; II, Adagio: 14':56"; III,
Rondo: Allegro non troppo: 11':29". If they are right, after all the date
on the cover is maybe true.
Unfortunately, as I'm leaving for a few days, I will not be able to listen
to these records until next week (in fact I haven't listened to them for
quite a few years now). When I will be back home, I will surely try to
find the time to listen to the various versions. I will let you know.
All the best,
Marco
