He also said he was retiring from the concert stage to concentrate
on composition. GG made a lot of statements that he never followed
through on.

I'm reminded of Gould's claim that he was a socialist. When pressed, he would
admit that maybe he _wasn't_ a socialist, but that he'd sure like to be one.
So when GG said that he planned to be a composer/conductor/socialist, I look
at it as a fantasy rather than a serious intention. Nothing wrong with
fantasizing out loud.
