Tim, many thanks for your long, careful and helpful post. No, I've 
never heard the versions you recommend. My version is by the 
Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. IMO these performers violate 
tempi in exactly the way that you describe. I do have trouble with 
many performances because the first performance I heard was Reiner. 
Purists may shudder but Reiner fairly sizzled. These were on vinyl 
and I played them until they wore out.
