Hmm. Here goes:
1. The English Chamber Orchestra with Philip Ledger,
two discs, available individually, budget price (L5.99?),
now reissued as IMP PCD 2006 & 2009. Why? Well, they're
not period instrument performances, but they're light,
beautifully played with a small chamber orchestra. Penguin
Guide rates them highly.
2. For a full price period instrument version, I guess I'd try
the English Concert with Trevor Pinnock. I collected Pinnock
recordings for a while, until the spiralling prices drove me to seek out
other cheaper alternatives which, if not period instruments, retain
a period flavour, use smaller forces etc etc. But that's
just a personal thing: some people like baroque music
played by big orchestras. I don't. Sorry, I don't have
discographical info for the Pinnock.
