GG:Cherubini
Thanks to Peter, Eberhardt and Robert for correcting my phoenetic
spelling of that composer GG liked so much, that Carabini ;-). GG's
pronunciation is more like "Care-uh-beenie."
EB:
Carabini is no doubt Maria Luigi Carlo Zenobio Salvatore Cherubini
(1760-1842), Italian composer who wrote masses and other sacred works in
the Italian polyphonic tradition. Also opera. Lived in Paris after
1788.
RK:
The composer Gould refers to is (I think),
Luigi Cherubini (1760-1842), an Italian composer usually regarded as
second-rank. His _Requiem_ is still performed (Riccardo Muti has
recorded it I think), and there are recordings of orchestral symphonies
too. He also composed for keyboard, and I imagine that's the music
Gould liked. I'm afraid my New Grove Dictionary of Music is at home, so
I can't say much more, but I hope this is helpful.
and PG:
This sounds like Luigi Cherubini, 1760-1842 Italian, and not the sort
of repertoire one would expect to fit with Gould's tastes but maybe
there are selected gems which caught his attention like the Bizet
nocturne which is another surprising choice.
Thanks!
