Gould attributed the saying about the centipede to a saying of Arnold
Schoenberg. I don't remember where I read it. Now Shoenberg did not invent
the saying. The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations attributes it to a Mrs.
Craster, who died in 1874:

The Centipede was happy quite,
Until the Toad in fun
Said "pray which leg goes after which?"
And worked her mind to such a pitch,
She lay distracted in the ditch
Considering how to run.
