Re: GG: David Bar-Ilan
Hi,
A friend of mine heard Bar-Ilan perform at Davidson College (North Carolina)
around 1960 when DB was about 20. My friend said that he was just about
the best pianist he had ever heard, (my friend was about 20 at the time
as well.)
Afterword they chatted in the record library of the College. He told me that
Bar-Ilan was very critical of his early recordings and insisted that they
throw them away and buy the newer records. (If we have any list members
in the Davidson Coll. area they might want to investigate the record library.)
There were a few other things they said, but they didn't seem important
to the discussion.
My friend said Bar-Ilan's performance was excellent. He sometimes would do
quirky things to keep the music interesting. A specific example would be
in the Chopin c# minor waltz accenting the second beat of every measure
as opposed to the first. He tole me Bar-Ilan only played the most traditional
paino repertory, never going into the 20th century stuff like Gould did.
I have no idea what has happened to Bar-Ilan since then. I'd love to pick up
one of his recordings if there are any. Any ideas?
