Leaving aside people's perceptions of fast playing I once made a table of
the
timings in the WTC by 8 or 9 performers and Gould was by far the fastest.  I
agree that once in a while he applies the brakes violently, like a speeding
driver who smells a police nearby.  I passed this table off-list to some
fellows
from the ols Bach list.
