RE: [F_minor] Glenn Gould movies

Welcome aboard Jose. It is unlikely that Sony will spend the money to re-issue the movies with subtitles. Glenn had a very personal way of speaking, sometimes a bit quickly. I grew up listening to him so I have an easier time. (Now that I recall, I promised myself that when the weather got better I would go visit his grave on a Sunday....tisk, tisk, I must get out and keep that promise). Jose, I live here in Toronto, Glenn's home town. Just down the street from my office is the CBC building with Glenn's permanent bronze statue outside the building.

Mea Culpa group: I downloaded from a torrent site the film (not available for purchase at this time) "32 Short films of Glenn Gould" I saw it once on television and was mesmerized. Strangely it has not been for sale for ages. I have to find time to watch it.

On another Glenn note, I found a web site that you can download free sheet music http://www.free-scores.com/search-uk.php?search=haydn%20piano&operateur=AND&CATEGORIE=&start4=30

(I hope the URL shows up, if not people can private post me)...and I downloaded some wonderful Haydn piano sonatas. When I finally got some time at home to play them I recognized some from Glenn's terrific Haydn album. Boy, these are mature Haydn pieces and not easy I tell you. They are musically more interesting than some of Mozart's. Haydn is for me unfairly eclipsed by Mozart's music. In many cases he has written superior gems. Those piano pieces Glenn chose are outstanding and not easy to play. There are many joys in his piano music and I encourage all to try looking at them.

A few words about Mozart's Piano Concertos 22 and 23. I had heard the 23 in the wonderful film "The new world" and I fell in love with the slow movement. It has one of the most hauntingly beautiful and sad themes in the whole musical language. Both of these concertos are not musically demanding on the player. The final theme of 22 has one of the simplest but most humable themes. I encourage all to try to find the music and play along. These are some of the best Woolfy wrote.

Finally: my wish list for the remainder of this year is to find the money or download the radio documentaries of Glenn. They are priceless in my view.

Kind regards and again welcome aboard the Glenn Gould Love Club.

Dear F_minor members

Since I have just subscribed F_minor and it's the first time I get in contact with you, let me take a few moments to present myself, at the light of this community.
I am from Portugal and sometimes you will have to forgive my english, since it's not my mother tongue, not even my first second language, that is french.
I have been listening classical music since I was little boy, and I have some musical background, but having had a very busy professional life, only when I retired two years ago, I could start spending enough time to really explore this world of music.....and then I discovered Glenn Gould and my life has changed forever.....and I have absolutely no words to describe how much I apreciate Glenn - his music, of course, but all the rest available to us.
Outside the books available on Glenn, I believe I have (with very few
exceptions) all the CD's and all the DVD's issued on him, and here I have a problem: the DVD's issued by Kultur (Extasis, Life and Times and The Russian Journey) don't have any kind of subtitles and for a foreigner like me sometimes it's hard to understand what Glenn says; I got in contact with Kultur but they can't do nothing since they get the tapes in finished format, they only make the DVD's and market them; on the other side, "The Glenn Gould Collection", series conceived by Kevin Wood based on Revcom series"Glenn Gould Plays" from programs of CBC and Societé Radio-Canadá, are not available in the market, at least on DVD format, what is a shame; I got them through the internet on a Hong Kong server with chinese (mandarin) subtitles and, although I have been there, it's a language that I don't understand; here I have the same problem with the DVD's - it's not easy to understand Glenn sometimes.
Would it be possible that we, community of Glenn Gould lovers, put some pressure on Sony (or other) to issue a full edition of all Glenn Gould movies, with subtitles at least in english and french ( the two national languages of Canada); I believe that Glenn would apreciated very much that his ideas and opinions could reach a much larger number of persons interested in musical matters.

All the best to you and F_minor
