RE: [F_minor] Re: Cornelia Foss reveals all!!!

I'll accept your characterization of Grieg's piano works as b-level music if you accept mine of most of Mozart's piano sonatas as b-level.

That is quite the claim and I won't touch it with a five bar reply in G major for that matter.

When you listen to GG talk about Bach's Art of Fugue you hear how GG had been transfigured by this music at an early age. Another thing about watching Glenn talk to someone when he's in front of the piano, when he wants to make a point, he just segways into playing huge chunks of music, all of it from memory, all of it flawless. The man had a supernatural memory or maybe just a photographic one; even more, he seemed to know so much music, even of course music that he would not record.

I have recently purchased more GG music and I will give a more full review another day. Suffice it to say that for the music of Grieg, Bizet and Sibelius (you can figure out which album this was), GG was able to imbue b-level music with great animation. The more I listen to it the more I am attracted to the music; it is a slow process because these are not a-level great pieces. There are in the Grieg a few moments of total joy. I am mindful that GG's recording of the Richard Strauss pieces are truly a monumental revelation of music that no one was even aware existed; I listen to them from time to time and they are terrific.

Just a closing thought: I think we should encourage each other to dust of a particular GG recording and then give a review. What did the music do for us, were we familiar with it, is this acceptable as interpretation (think: Mozart), does GG just go too far with tempos, etc. I really enjoy discussing particular recordings and hearing what his music does for other people.

Cheers,

Fred

I agree that Bach may be the most religious composer who ever lived. But I accept that only because his spirituality goes far far beyond anything Christianity has to offer.
