Re: AW: [F_minor] Cornelia Foss reveals all!!!

Hi Peter, Pat, f_minorites --

I've filched The Star article, the photo of Cornelia Foss on the beach from her GG days, and one of her lovely seascapes of Long Island, on my goofy blog.

http://vleeptronz.blogspot.com/2007/08/glenn-gould-and-cornelia-foss-music-art.html

I suspect that for some, the appearance of this story in The Toronto Star rather than in The Globe and Mail may have been slightly off-putting. I think perhaps news consumers get a little snooty and believe only The Globe and Mail is good enough for our beloved GG, while The Star stains him with disrespect and a loud clashing Hawaiian shirt. (Logically, a true GG lover can only listen to his Goldbergs through the prestigious national broadsheet.) But I think this subliminal newspaper snobbery overlooks the authentic universal Canadian love of and pride in GG.

There's room in a single human brain for Glenn Gould and the Hockey scores, and The Star deserves high marks for ambitiously serving its readers who hunger for both. To get Cornelia Foss to reminisce about her romance with GG was an authentic "scoop," kudos to The Star for getting it. Wikipedia's entry on The Toronto Star tells a remarkable story of a remarkable, vibrant, historically important newspaper.

Who knows -- maybe GG preferred reading The Star to the G&M over his scrambled eggs at the diner.

Pat and I collided on f_minor and have been merrilly arguing for years about a huge range of the human experience (particularly who's Phony and who's Real in punk music).

This summer has seemed quite ghastly to me -- a ceaseless and relentless media storm of senseless cruelty, stupidity, suffering, bad weather ("climate porn" is a new buzzword) ... Even NASA astronauts have been flying drunk in space and forced to wear ankle bracelet monitors.

Then suddenly this morning an Ottawa pal who knows my love for GG (and PET) sent me the url to this story, and it was as if the Sun broke through the clouds and birds began to sing.

It has always been so sad, as I listen to his ethereal music, for me to wrap GG in an adult life of loneliness, to perceive that love and intimacy were lifelong denied him. Now my vision paints him not so alone, but in the company of a lover of talent, wit, dimension, character and achievement. Until now I never used the words "happy" and "lucky" in connection with GG. But the guy clearly knew happiness and the guy clearly had his share of luck. I'm grateful to Michael Clarkson and The Star for letting me see Glenn Gould in Love.

Bob
