Playing works on instruments for which they weren't written

Hi all,

 

In a lot of the material about GG that I read and see the issue of playing the Bach works on piano comes up a lot.  I am wondering whether this really was an issue in his time or whether it was just a small number of critics who objected.  The reason I ask is that it doesn't seem to be an issue now.
