cathedral being built or the paintings of M.C. Escher
(upstairs/downstairs).

If you haven't run across Douglas Hofstadter's book Godel, Escher, Bach,
you might enjoy it :).

This is probably the best book I ever read. It encompasses such diverse fields as music, art, abstract mathematics, computer science, linguistics, philosophy, neuroscience... the list goes on and on. It is extremely interesting to read, often witty and humorous, an incredibly complex and "fugal" piece of literature. Get a copy and read it right away! Some chapters are rather densely written and they may not appeal to the non-scientist or non-mathematician right away, but much of it can be read and enjoyed by everyone. I first read it when I was thirteen and it changed my whole way of thinking about music and life in general. Since then, I must have read through it about ten times, understanding more of it each time, and always thoroughly enjoying it. So...read this book!
