Another way?

Nessie Russell has pointed out that young musicians will use competitions as a way to jump-start their careers .... but what of the "losers" who may, given time, turn out to be  wonderful artists too?  Is it beyond the realms of possibility that we could devise a way for young musicians to have the chance of  showcasing  their talents without the element of 'competition?  Any ideas, anyone?

The Internet is providing places for young artists to showcase their work.  MP3s do not have the sound quality of CDs, but they do give us an idea of what the artist sounds like.  Many musicians have their own sites.  EMusic has mostly old albums but they do feature new artists sometimes. When you download these MP3s from legal sites the artist gets a small fee.  Every little bit helps.
