There's a little information on the cover article
to the current edition of "Piano" which is about our man Gould at
Actually, there are two articles in it, one that
focuses on Gould's early development and another on Gould's attitude towards
working in the studio.
Not much new in terms of content if you've read the
bios. But perhaps something of interest to collectors. There's also
a Gould discography in the magazine, which could act as a kind of short-hand
supplement to the Canning work, but certainly not something to surpass
it.
I forget if the magazine says this explicitly, but
by connecting the dots in magazine I realized for the first time that
the Gould CBC recording of the Goldberg Variations *predates* any public
performance of the work by him. He starts giving performances of the work
soon after making that recording in 1954. And from what I can tell, he
only gave one performance of the work before he recorded it for CBS.
Interesting. How did that slip under my radar?
