Thanks for your insights. Have to take exception to your description of
Schubert's Sonatas as 'showy' or 'pianistic' I can't think of two adjectives
less appropriate to these pieces. This was why I made the original point.
They have little in common with the Chopin/Liszt that Gould disliked. I take
the point of Gould's primary interest in counterpoint but as I already
mentioned, if he could play Brahms, why not Schubert? These composers' music
structually, have more in common, in my opinion.
