I do agree with an opinion by Haward.
1955 version of Goldberg in A State of Wonder is, at least, much better than
GG Edition.
It may be better than CBS version.

1955 version of the Goldberg Variations as CD1 of "a State of Wonder" should
have been "brilliantly remastered", but the result was surprisingly
different. Now it has only shabby and low dynamic-ranged sound. It has lost
the original fresh beauty. Why?


I had a completely opposite listening experience; to me the remastered
version sounds infinitely better than the GG Edition, which is both harsh
and unduly compressed.  It's amazing how differently people hear the same
things.
