Re: The Unpublished Recordings of Glenn Gould

One thing I wonder about: Glenn was an avid user of tape recording
equipment, a well known fact. I suppose he must have recorded himself quite
often, playing piano. Perhaps even recorded duets with other musicians, in
the privacy of his apartment studio? So what happened to all those tapes?
Did the estate wind up with them and if so, what have they done with them?
Are they properly stored in case future (or present) music historians would
need/like to hear them. I can only assume that there must be some veritable
gems on those tapes. Obviously, Glenn would never have authorized their
release during his lifetime, being such a perfectionist, but I feel that he
probably had some very decent recording equipment (I know he owned Ampex
AG440 tape decks, which were the standard for radio broadcast at the CBC,
and probably could afford some fine microphones too), so the quality of
these recordings is probably quite good. I'm not suggesting that someone
issue "Glenn Gould bootlegs", or "Glenn Gould's Basement Tapes", but it
would be nice in a way for someone to be given access to these tapes and
assess what is on them, and what might be worth sharing with the world. I'd
gladly volunteer for that job by the way (I have some Ampex 440's in my own
house!) :-)
Anyways, just a thought. Perhaps someone else has some better information
on the existence, whereabouts and contents of such "home made" recordings.
