Re: Eine Kleine Digression

I emerge from hybernation for this digression. (Remember the original question came
from Teun in Holland).

So finally Klein reveals his colours. I doubt the HIP movement will find much
support amongst this group. HIP is a euphemism for intellectual snobbery. These
people do not appreciate music for its own sake. They are caught up in the vanity
of emulation. They lead an ossified existence, probably sustained by an exclusive
diet of organically grown vegetables.

J.S. would probably not have approved of many of Gould's performances. Beethoven,
on the other hand, would have. He probably played Bach with the same rhythmic
gusto. But it's all water out of the spout. I listen to music because it sounds
good. Not because it's kosher. As Tuen says, "they're dead".

Rober Kanuth is right. Bach is too pure to be restrained by formalistic
considerations such as HIP.

I trust, Mary, that this is an e-mail of substance.

Farewell Klein. If you had fewer feathers you would stay on the list. But if you
decline to stay, that's your bizz.

But this is a digression from Teun's original question.

Yes, I am one who spends most of my "applied" waking day learning Bach's keyboard
music. Gould is an inspiration to that end. He captures the essence.
