re:The Concerto

Dear list,
With regard to the fault at 0:07 of the Gould/Bernstein Bach Concerto
#1, I always found it fascinating that in 1987 Columbia Masterworks
released a CD set of the Bach concerti, and omitted the Bernstein studio
rendition in favour of the 1957 live from Leningrad version. I always
wondered if Bernstein suppressed the recording. It did not return to
the catalogue until after Bernstein's death.
See Friedrich p.72 for a discussion of Gould's alleged comment
"Bernstein's not ready" in connexion with recording Beethoven #2, which
is the flip side of the Bach #1 record. (Incidentally, this LP is
plentiful in Toronto used record shops).
See also Friedrich P.280 for mention of Gould's 1976 plan to re-record
with Karajan the only two concerti he made with Bernstein: Bach #1 and
Beethoven #2. These two were also in mono, which made them more likely
candidates for re-recording. Draw your own conclusions.
