Re: Opinions about GGE vol. 5?

Well, you have got the most important Bach records; although
there is a little more (Italian concerto, overture in French
style, etc., some of which you may already have on the
records you mentioned). IMHO, the Mozart recordings are
fantastic, but you are not the first person I have heard say
that. I do not own the Haydn recordings but I have heard
some of them and, not surprisingly, I think if you like his
Mozart recordings you will like the Haydn recordings as
well. Bear in mind that GG brings his unique style of
playing to everything that he does; this is what bothers
some people about the Mozart etc. Nonetheless, IMHO, there
is nothing about his style that is inconsistent with the
classical style and I think his Mozart shows a thorough
     familiarity with that genre.

The Beethovens, particularly the very late sonatas that he
recorded immediately after the GVs, were at the time the
most controversial work he ever did as far as I know. They
received some horrible reviews. I'm not sure they're as
controversial now. Beethoven may be better suited to some
of the features of his playing that bother you in the
     Mozarts.

One thing you have to say: he did all the Mozarts and darn
near all of the Beethovens. That alone makes the sets worth
having; they're an invaluable reference resource.

Hello everybody,

I consider buying Volume 5 of the GGE (contents: see below), but I would
like to have some advise about it first. At the moment most of my GG recordings
is Bach
(Partita's, WTC I & II, Goldberg V., French & English Suites) and the
Mozart Sonates. I think the Bach work is very special, but I'm not as
enthousiastic about his Mozart.

My question is:
-How is his Beethoven and Haydn?

ps: I just want some varying opinions, please don't start to discuss
opinions from others.
